Sponsored by the Lions Club, the Leo Club was first organized by the Abington High School, Pennsylvania, USA baseball team in 1957. Lions James Graver and William Ernst formed the club to introduce the youth to community service. In 1968, the Leo Club Program was officially adopted by the board of directors of the Lions Clubs International.

Today, there are more than 5,584 Leo Clubs in 139 nations.  Leo Club membership exceeds 139,600 with 114 Leo Districts and 20 Leo Multiple Districts.

Each club has its own Lions club sponsor and Leo advisor and the club motto is WE SERVE.

The objective of the Leo Club program is
"... to provide the youth of the world (with) an opportunity for development and contribution, individually and collectively, as responsible members of the local, national and international community."

The motto of the Leo Club Program is Leadership, Experience, Opportunity.

Leadership traits include organization skills, time management and personal motivation, which are developed when young people complete community service projects.

The experience of serving the community teaches the young people the importance of cooperation.

Opportunities for growth, maturiy and a new perspective of the community occur when young people perform community service.
